Patents are meant to simply promote innovation and creativity by motivating the timely disclosure of how to make and use different inventions and also by protecting a number of investments carried out to commercialize these inventions. They try to achieve this by needing that a prompt and complete disclosure is done by the inventor of the ways to use the same and by giving the monopoly for some limited amount of time to the respective patent owner in order to disallow others to use and abuse in any form without a complete disclosure of the same. However, when it comes to software patents, many feel that these do not work on the things as discussed above rather, it simply maligns or discourages the innovation carried out by people in the software industry. This is the basic reason why many dislike the idea of patenting in software industry.
